- hand grinder or scissors
- glass baking dish or sheet pan
- oven
Process 2: Infusion
- medium sauce pan
- wooden spoon
- thermometer (optional)
- cheesecloth and/or a metal strainer
- a mason jar or storage container
Ingredients
Process 1: Decarboxylation
Process 2: Infusion
- 1/2 cup of water
- 8 oz. of grass fed butter
- 1/2 oz of decarboxylated cannabis
Directions
Making CannaButter can be divided into two processes: Decarboxylation and Infusion. Decarboxylating raw cannabis is important for allowing the THC and CBD to activate. This process requires a low level of heat to allow the butter to bind to the cannabis in the infusion process.
Process 1: Decarboxylation
- Preheat your oven to 220 degrees Farenheit
- Gently break apart the desired amount of cannabis using scissor, hand grinder, or even your hands. You’re looking for a fine consistency but not so fine that it will slip through cheesecloth when we strain in the infusion process.
- Spread the flower material evenly on the glass baking dish or sheet pan.
- Bake for 30- 45 minutes, checking frequently and mixing every 10 minutes to prevent burning. You will see the plant material change from bright green to brownish green, this is when you’ll know the decarbing process is complete.
- You’re ready to infuse!
Process 2: Infusion
Note: You can simply melt your butter or follow the directions in step 2 for clarified butter. Clarified butter can result in a more even consistency.
- Heat 8 oz. of butter in a medium sauce pan over low heat until it melts.
- Once fully melted, skim the white milk solids and any water from the top of the butter with a spoon (optional: for clarified butter)
- Add the decarboxylated cannabis material and mix well with a wooden spoon.
- Cover with a lid and let simmer on very low heat for 4 hours. Stir every 30 minutes to prevent burning. If you have a thermometer, make sure the temperature stays below 180 degrees Farenheit.
- Once the 4 hours has lapsed, strain the mixture with a cheesecloth ro metal strainer over a mason jar or other storage container.
- Allow to cool to room temerature. Use immediately or keep in the refrigerator or freezer for later use.
- Congrats! You’ve made your own CannaButter!
