“Psychonaut”. It is a very cool word. The short definition: A psychonaut is someone who explores altered states of consciousness, unique states of mind and possibilities outside the mind altogether. It can as well apply to the scientists doing the research. You can be a psychonaut at home while seeking to understand clairvoyance. You can be a psychonaut as you explore the mind-nature connection as you work on a magick spell. There is just no end to the applications of this word.
“Psychonaut”, the word itself, is a combination of the Greek words “psyche”, meaning “spirit/mind,” and “nautes”, meaning “sailor/navigator”. Therefore, a psychonaut is someone who navigates and explores the spirit or mind. Alternatively, it could be used to refer to someone who explores other states of existence by using their spirit or mind as a means of travel.
Being a Psychonaut is essentially about learning to “experience ourselves.” Without such a firsthand objective experience of the mind, I believe it is difficult to form a harmonious relationship with our feelings, thoughts, and other mental processes. For example, without truly having experienced the “psychological fabric” of our thoughts and be capable of taking a perceptual step back from them, our thoughts are more likely to lead us around in circles, resulting in conflict within our minds.
The psychedelic experience is never ending however, and it can continually act as a source of enrichment in people’s lives. When you become more and more comfortable maneuvering amongst these states, it eventually gives it more of a feeling of exploration…like you are willingly going on adventure where you have a general idea of what sorts of things you may like to explore, but at the same time having no idea where the hell you’re actually going to end up. You can continue to experience personal stuff if you like, or you can try to reach areas that bring you outside of yourself, where you cease to exist. This area has its very own zone of lessons and knowledge that you can bring back once your shattered ego slowly begins to put itself back together, providing it with new pieces of insight to add to you.
